I went on a 4 day safari in Kenya in December, 3 days at the Masai Mara and a day at Lake Nakuru and enjoyed it. Its true that you will see other safari vans around throughout the day but you will get to see all of the animals. All Kenyan safaris depart from Nairobi. I paid about 80 dollars a day and went with Primetime Safaris.
I also did a two day safari in Tanzania in January. one day at Lake Manyara and a day at Ngorongoro Crater and was also impressed. I saw an incredible amount of elephants at Lake Manyara, and they just pop up out of the forest so its really cool and at Ngorongoro Crater you see all kinds of animals in a very densly packed area, including the black rhino, which is really rare.
Zanzibar was amazing, great for beaches and history but not for animals or anything like that.
I haven't been to Vic Falls but I have friends who have and I know it is a touristy area so def. safe for people to visit.
whatever you do, I know a 10 year old would have a blast. hope you guys have fun
References :
There are several good touring companies --- Mountaintravelsobek.com is one, and Wildernesstravel.com is another. Have used both of these. Talk with them. They cancel tours at the first sign of any danger.... it is uncool to loose a tourist...

Victoria Falls is absolutely lovely, and of course it is touristy. But go any way. And there is a great place to buy really wonderful carvings, and see a show of African Dancers... It's outdoors, so don't get trapped into some hotel show......and an easy walk from, Illala Lodge, or any area.... (Victoria Falls Lodge is as well a nice place.... Vic Falls is rather the playground of South Africans.....Tons of clothes, hand made baskets, as well as some really expensive things. The shops downtown are nice too...Vic Falls, itself is spectacular, and you can walk across the bridge into Zambia, and watch the bungie jumpers (my husband did that). You'll need your passport, and be patient as everyone in the world will need to see it. You can hire a white water rafting trip, or go out and ride African elephants, all safe---we were there in '98 and '99. Check the above touring companies.

Kenya is still safe, and the Mara is still beautiful. Avoid Mombasa, however, unless your are with a group. From what I understand Nairobi is still relatively safe, but again, only walk in a group, bury your $ in a money belt under your clothing, wear no jewelry, buy some cheap watch, and always, anywhere, be careful of the children who , if they see you are wearing a necklace or earrings will try to get them. (so don't ear any). Just use common sense. Even if you are black, you are American, or European, and in the eyes of poor Africans, you are rich. Windhoek, Namibia has really never been safe. When we have gone there, the hotel insisted on taking us exactly where we wanted to go, where we wanted to shop, and the driver watched us like a hawk. When we wanted to eat at a particular restaurant, the hotel took us there, and asked us not to walk back to the hotel--- that they would come and get us. Tsumeb was safe, and the Skeleton Coast was awesome. Our guide took us to the Wreck of the Winston, which was great photographically...Etosha National Park was to die for, as was Epupa Falls... I could go on forever.....

I've been all over Africa...in the '90's. Write if you have any other questions. The only country now, as far as I am aware that is truly unsafe is Zimbabwe, and that is too bad, because it was just lovely, and we got to stalk black rhino on foot. Now? I wouldn't go there on any bet..... and I doubt that any touring company is there now. Tanzania was also great......
References :
Without a doubt, link up with a Kenyan Tour operator for the best safari. Kenya cannot be said to be Touristy if you compare France, UK, Spain and Egypt who receive 75 million, 38 million 62 million and 6 million tourists on average compared to Kenya's only 2 million. Kenya as most favorite destination YES!!!!!, too touristy NO.

If you have no Tour Operator in mind email me for some contacts.
References :
http://www.world-tourism.org/

I've only been to Kenya for a safari, but I was NOT dissapointed. Got to see all of the major animals at extremely close range.

The company was www.somak.com - worth checking them out.

You will have a ball
References :
www.somak.com

Both sound good. It's really hard to decide, but if I had to I'd choose the safari. I've already been to an island (not a deserted one, though).
