The Boabeng Monkey Sanctuary is
situated on
the way to the Mole
National Park and is Ghana's most
famous example of
African
conservation. It is home to over
160 Geoffroys Pied Colobus and 350
Campbell's Mona Monkeys.
For over 150 years the people of the area
between Boabeng and Fiema have considered the monkeys sacred and
traditional
beliefs prohibit harm coming to the monkeys.
The monkeys are forest monkeys. As they live
so close to humans they can be seen many a time serving
themselves from
local kitchens.
The Campbell's Monkeys are brown in
colors
and eat leaves, stems, flowers,
fruits and insects. The Geoffroy's Pied
Monkeys are black and white and live
off leaves, stems and mineralized
earth.
Here man and animal live in harmony
together which has become a rare sight.
